Tiger Eye is a semi-precious gemstone known for its distinctive golden-brown color and chatoyancy, or "cat's eye" effect. It is a variety of quartz mineral, primarily composed of silicon dioxide, and is formed through the replacement of crocidolite fibers by silica over millions of years.
Color: Tiger Eye exhibits a rich golden-brown color with bands or stripes of yellow, brown, and sometimes red or blue. The stone's chatoyancy causes a luminous band of light to move across its surface when viewed from different angles.
Chatoyancy: Tiger Eye displays a unique optical phenomenon known as chatoyancy, which gives it a silky, iridescent sheen resembling the eye of a tiger or cat. This effect is caused by the reflection and scattering of light along parallel fibrous structures within the stone.
Texture: Tiger Eye has a smooth, polished surface and a waxy to vitreous luster. It is typically opaque to translucent, with a moderate hardness.
Origin: Tiger Eye is found in various regions around the world, including South Africa, Australia, Brazil, India, and the United States.
Tiger Eye is commonly used in jewelry making, particularly in the creation of cabochons, beads, and carvings. It is often cut and polished into oval or round cabochons to showcase its chatoyancy and unique coloration. Tiger Eye is prized for its symbolic significance and is believed to bring protection, prosperity, and clarity of mind to its wearer. In addition to its ornamental use, Tiger Eye is also used in decorative objects, such as figurines, paperweights, and sculptures, and has cultural and spiritual significance in various traditions around the world.
